How Passionate Do We Need to Be?

College is a new experience. For many students, including myself, it is a time where we leave our family in order to pursue a better future. During these times away from the family and the piles of homework that naturally come with the college education, students become stressed. In an article titled “On the Uses of a Liberal Education: As Lite Entertainment for Bored College Students” Mark Edmundson states that college students have “little fire, little passion…” He also relates a scene of a male and female in a heated argument and calls this passion.  I think this statement can be true for some students that get wrapped up in the stress of life and lose interest in things that they previously enjoyed and loved. But I do not think that students have to loudly argue a point in order to show passion. I believe passion can come in all different forms. I believe I have passion for music, my religion, and my family. For my family I would fight for them and would definitely argue with an individual if they were hurting them in any way. However, for music and my religion I understand that people have different opinions so bellowing loudly at those who do not share my beliefs would not make any sense. It would make more sense to me to be able to share these passions with one another without the need for argument.
Ultimately, I believe there are times in our lives where we can become passionless if we do not find something that releases us from the worldly pressures that can stifle our happiness. In whatsoever way possible whether it is through arguing or through mild discussion we must exercise our passions to remain human.
